James Naughtie reflects on Lady Thatcher's life

The sound of Margaret Thatcher's voice will resonate across the UK today and the many journalists who watched her professionally over many years will remember the electric effect of her political style.

Having watched her throughout her time as prime minister, in 1990 Today presenter James Naughtie spoke to her at length for a radio documentary to mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of The Wealth of Nations by one of her heroes, Adam Smith - the moral philosopher and maybe the first economist.

Presenter and politician sat in the White Drawing Room at Number 10 and she spoke about her political career.

Recorded only a few months before she was brought down by her own party, James Naughtie remembers that she was on sparkling form.

He asked her to go back to the time when she broke, philosophically, with Edward Heath, and explained her political inspirations.
