Tory EU commitment 'has to be believable'

An attempt by David Cameron to quell unrest among some Conservatives about Britain's relationship with the European Union seems to have failed to win over Euro-sceptics.

The party will publish draft legislation today, guaranteeing an in-out referendum on the EU before the end of 2017.

Speaking to Today presenter Sarah Montague, Conservative MP John Baron said that "the political establishment has avoided giving the electorate a genuine choice on this issue for 30 years, I believe the time has now come."

Conservative MP Peter Bone said that he agreed with Mr Baron and Mr Cameron: "A strong vote tomorrow would solve the prime minister's problem and Nick Clegg would just have to accept it."

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday 14 May 2013.
