UK beaches face signs on sea water quality

New standards for water quality mean many UK beaches could soon be forced to display warnings.

Under the new EU Bathing Waters Directive to be introduced in 2015, beaches will be subject to much tougher standards.

Signs will be displayed on beaches advising bathers of water quality, which some fear could have a negative impact on tourism.

A total of 42 beaches failed to meet the minimum EU levels expected for bathing water in testing in 2012.
