Mallard record: On board a classic A4 Class steam engine
Seventy-five years ago a world record was achieved by a steam engine called Mallard.
Its design inspired by Bugatti motor cars, the A4 Pacific class locomotive thundered along the east coast mainline near Grantham and for a fleeting few seconds touched 126mph.
The record, which has never been beaten, propelled Mallard to almost legendary status.
To mark the anniversary, the National Railway Museum in York has arranged for Mallard to meet its five surviving sister locomotives from the A4 Class - which ran on the East Coast Mainline from the 1930s to the 1960s.
Danny Savage took a ride in the cab of another A4 engine, this one named after the man who designed them, Sir Nigel Gresley.
