Sir John Major calls for 'windfall tax' for energy companies

The former Conservative prime minister, Sir John Major, has called for a one-off tax on the profits of the big energy companies.

Downing Street described his comments as "an interesting contribution" but said there was no plan to tax energy firms.

Labour welcomed Sir John's intervention, and said it was in line with their own argument, although shadow energy secretary Caroline Flint said a windfall tax would be "complicated".

James Landale reports.
