Food crime a 'very serious issue'

The government is being urged to set up a specialist food crime unit to help prevent a repeat of this year's horse meat scandal.

Professor Chris Elliott made the call in the first part of his review into the safety and authenticity of food supplies in the UK.

He told the BBC the UK's food was among the safest in the world, but it was right that domestic and international agencies now considered food crime as "a very serious issue."
