Court of Appeal judges to rule on whole-life terms

The Court of Appeal is to announce whether judges in England and Wales can continue to give convicted criminals whole-life sentences without the chance of review.

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg ruled last year that whole-life terms were a breach of human rights.

It said that while it accepted whole-life orders could be justified, there should nevertheless be some way of having a sentence reviewed after 25 years.
