UK storms: Efforts to weather-proof rail network

Rail companies are facing a bill of millions of pounds to repair the damage caused by flooded tracks, landslips and trees being blown onto the lines this winter.

The West Country was completely cut off when the track at Dawlish collapsed, and flooding across the south of England has caused delays and cancellations on many services.

In the next five years, some £300m will be spent toughening the rail network against the effects of the weather - but can the rail network really be climate-proofed?
