'Magical' Northern Lights displays

The Aurora Borealis - better known as the Northern Lights - gave rare and spectacular displays overnight over parts of the UK.

The lights were clearly visible from north of Scotland to as far south as Jersey.

The Northern Lights appear as shimmering waves of light when atoms in the Earth's high-altitude atmosphere collide with energetic charged particles from the sun.

BBC weather presenter Helen Willets says the displays were "magical".
