Undercover police 'tried to disrupt' Lawrence campaign bid

A former undercover police officer has told the BBC how he was ordered to undermine the Justice for Stephen Lawrence campaign.

Pete Francis told the BBC's Newsnight programme senior officers in the Metropolitan Police feared public disorder if the campaign were to gain widespread public support.

Home Secretary Theresa May has announced a public inquiry to investigate allegations that Metropolitan Police officers lied and hid evidence relating to the original investigation of Stephen Lawrence's murder.

The new report examined police behaviour after the murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence in 1993 and subsequent efforts to prevent Sir William Macpherson's inquiry from establishing the truth.
