Could convictions be quashed because of undercover police?

The home secretary has ordered a public inquiry into undercover policing, after a report released on Thursday found officers had spied on the family of the murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence.

It is to be held after the final report of Operation Herne - the criminal investigation into Scotland Yard's Special Demonstration Squad - and the completion of a review into possible miscarriages of justice.

So could some convictions be quashed as a result?

Speaking to the BBC, the head of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, said it was "a very serious" issue that was "very worrying", but he could not prejudice the inquiry.

Meanwhile, Commander Richard Walton, who was named in Thursday's report, has been temporarily moved from his post.
