'Big rise' in fines for parents over holiday absences

The number of parents being fined for taking their children on holiday when they should be at school has risen dramatically, according to BBC research.

The survey, by BBC Breakfast, revealed that the number of fines issued had increased by more than 70% since the government introduced tougher regulations on term-time absence last September.

The 34 councils across England that responded said almost 5,300 fines had been imposed during the autumn term.
