Mystery dog disease confirmed as 'Alabama Rot'

A mystery dog disease which has been killing dogs in Britain has been confirmed as a strain of Alabama Rot.

At least 40 dogs suffered kidney failure after developing skin lesions on their legs and chest.

Alabama Rot, which originated in America, wiped out hundreds of greyhounds in the 1980s.

Vet David Walker told BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast: "They have the same changes as the greyhounds reported in the 1980s, but what we don't know at this stage what the trigger for the disease is."

A spokesperson from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs urged dog owners to contact their local vet if they had concerns about their pet.
