Hillsborough referee Ray Lewis recalls 1989 semi-final

The referee in the 1989 FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough, which was abandoned as the disaster that saw 96 Liverpool fans lose their lives unfolded, has told the BBC that ahead of the match there was nothing unusual about the afternoon.

Ray Lewis stopped the match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, being played at Sheffield Wednesday's ground, after six minutes.

He has been among thousands of people attending a memorial service at Liverpool's Anfield stadium to mark the 25th anniversary of the disaster.

Mr Lewis said: "We did notice that the Leppings Lane end was crowded in certain areas and empty in others and people were being moved from full pens into empty pens but, to be quite honest, that used to happen in quite a lot of grounds, so it wasn't anything which said 'this is unusual'."
