Euro moments: 'Reassert the right to rule ourselves'

Journalists Patrick Cosgrave, Sally Vincent and Paul Johnson present the case for the "No" campaign ahead of the 1975 referendum on the UK's membership of the European Economic Community.

The National Referendum Campaign (NRC) was the umbrella body for the "No" lobby in the 1975 referendum.

Overwhelmingly outspent by its opponents, Britain in Europe, the NRC lost the referendum by a two-to-one margin.

The Campaign was formed towards the end of 1974, and brought together existing eurosceptic bodies Get Britain Out, the Anti-Common Market League, British Business for World Markets, as well as a number of trade unions.

The Conservative and Labour front benches wanted Britain to stay in the EEC, but prominent figures on the left of Labour such as Tony Benn, Michael Foot and Barbara Castle advocated leaving, causing a split in the cabinet.

The Ulster Unionists under Enoch Powell's leadership, the SNP and Plaid Cymru also opposed Britain's membership.
