What does 'halal' meat actually mean?

Faith leaders have called for clearer meat packaging, after it emerged some retailers were selling halal products without telling consumers.

But what does "halal" meat actually mean?

Saqib Mohammed from the Halal Food Authority explained that, for meat to be halal, the animal must have its throat cut, be trained of blood and be blessed by the slaughter man.

Mr Mohammed told BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast that stunning to render the animal unconscious was allowed, as long the procedure did not kill the animal initially.
