Nigel Farage: 'Thatcherism was of its time'

Nigel Farage has denied that UKIP is attempting to be a new Thatcher party despite his praise for Margaret Thatcher's leadership.

The UKIP leader told the BBC's Andrew Marr: "Thatcherism was of its time, 40 years ago, to deal with a specific set of problems."

Speaking on The Andrew Marr Show, Mr Farage gave some indications of what will be in the party's manifesto outside of its key messages on leaving the EU and reducing immigration.

He said his party was going to "rethink the tax thing", with a policy of no tax on the minimum wage and a top tax rate of "around about" 40%. He also maintained that bringing in more grammar schools would deal with a "shaming" lack of social mobility in Britain, declaring, "selective education is one of the ways to give bright kids from poor backgrounds a real opportunity."

You can watch the Andrew Marr Show in full on the BBC iPlayer.
