UKIP 'encouraged' by Newark result

The defeated UKIP candidate in the Newark by-election has said he is encouraged by the party's result despite losing to the Conservatives.

Roger Helmer polled 10,028 votes in finishing second to Robert Jenrick.

But in his speech, Mr Helmer said although UKIP had hoped to win, the party had made good progress in the seat since the last general election.
