Scottish referendum: Choppy waters for UK defence projects?

On Friday, the Queen will end a week of engagements in Scotland by naming the Royal Navy's latest aircraft carrier, built at Rosyth and shipyards on the River Clyde.

HMS Queen Elizabeth and her sister ship cost more than £6bn and secured 4,000 jobs across Scotland.

The UK government says it will not build any future warships in an independent Scotland but nationalists point out that the UK already buys planes and other elements of its defence arsenal from other countries.

Allan Little considers the prospects for similar defence projects in the future.
