Ex-Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey backs assisted dying

Former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey says he will support legislation that would make it legal for terminally ill people in England and Wales to receive help to end their lives.

He is the most senior figure in the Church of England to come out in favour of assisted dying legislation.

Writing in the Daily Mail, he said he had dropped his opposition to the Assisted Dying Bill "in the face of the reality of needless suffering".

Robert Pigott reports.
