In Charles Dickens' England paupers funerals were reserved for those suffering extreme destitution, but they are not consigned to the past.

Thousands of people - unable to pay for their own funerals or without relatives who can - are cremated or buried every year in simple send-offs paid for by local councils, and recent research suggests these public health funerals are on the rise.
