Police on child abuse images 'Grossly understaffed'

Police forces are struggling to cope with the mountain of child abuse images they have to deal with, according to children's charity the NSPCC.

Sharon Girling, a former detective sergeant, told the Today programme that computer crime units investigating child abuse images are "grossly underfunded and grossly understaffed".

She added that it is "quite alarming" that Lancashire Constabulary has only three forensic examiners to extract data from over 700 computers seized by the force.

"I've dealt with cases where there can be more than a million images on a particular hard drive," she added.
