Internet data plan back on political agenda

A law forcing communications firms to pass on details that could help identify criminals using the internet is being planned by the home secretary, Theresa May.

The Anti-Terrorism and Security Bill would compel firms to give the details, if requested, to the police and security services.

Authorities say new powers are needed to monitor suspects but civil liberties groups have cautioned that they could be used against anyone.
