Homelessness project 'made a huge difference to my life'

As new homelessness figures are released in Scotland and England this week, Glasgow has become the first place to adopt a radical new approach to cutting homelessness.

The Housing First project offers a home to those on the streets or in temporary accommodation. It was piloted by Turning Point Scotland, a drugs charity which works with housing associations to offer homes to those with drink and drug addictions.

They say it makes financial sense, costing less to house someone than to pay the hospital, intervention or justice costs for those on the streets.

Parts of North America and Canada, where the scheme began, say they have "practically eradicated homelessness".

Jeremy Cooke has been to see how it works, and met 47-year old Joe who is a former heroin addict.
