Storm Desmond breaches Cumbria flood defences

Some flood defences in areas struck by Storm Desmond could not cope with the extreme rainfall, the Environment Agency has acknowledged.

Almost 14 inches (340mm) are believed to have fallen in the Lake District in 24 hours, which would be a new British record.

The flooding in Carlisle follows millions of pounds of investment in defences after major flooding six years ago.

Science Editor David Shukman reports from Cumbria.
