Europe Referendum 1975: How BBC reported Wales results

The people of Britain were previously asked to vote on the UK's relationship with Europe in 1975, two years after Conservative Prime Minister Edward Heath led the country into the then European Economic Community (EEC).

After Labour won the October 1974 general election, new Prime Minister Harold Wilson called the UK's first ever referendum on whether to stay in what was then referred to as the Common Market or leave.

In those days, Labour was far more divided over Europe than the Tories, who were still mostly in favour under new leader Margaret Thatcher.

The result was a margin of two to one in favour of staying in the EEC, with the "Yes" vote in Wales at 65% slightly lower than the UK figure of 67%.
