Euro Moments: Tony Benn loses cabinet post over Europe
Labour cabinet minister Tony Benn campaigned strongly against Britain remaining in the European Economic Community during the 1975 referendum campaign.
But when the country overwhelmingly endorsed continued membership of the common market, he was effectively sacked as secretary of state for industry, and moved to the Department for Energy.
Mr Benn, who had come under criticism from Prime Minister Harold Wilson during the campaign, was not alone in his support of British withdrawal, with the Labour cabinet split over the issue.
