Grammar schools: May's vision of a 'great meritocracy'

Setting out far-reaching proposed reforms to schools in England, Theresa May says the expansion of grammar and faith schools is not a return to the 1950s but a decisive shift towards helping "ordinary working class families" fulfill their potential.

The shake-up, which also would give state schools the freedom to select pupils by academic ability if they meet certain conditions, is part of her goal of the UK becoming the "world's great meritocracy".
