Tony Piper: 'When we got over the target all hell broke loose'

Tony Piper was born in 1922. He didn’t want to go into the Army but he was interested in radar and decided to join the RAF.

He was sent to Harrogate and then found himself zig-zagging across the Atlantic to North America aboard the Queen Mary.

Initial training was as a torpedo bomber but he eventually ended up in an entirely different plane - the Mosquito.

He also has an unusual story to tell about the days leading up to D-Day when he came home aboard a ship packed with US troops.
