Archbishop Williams criticises child abuse failings

An inquiry commissioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, has condemned the Diocese of Chichester for its "appalling" record in handling allegations of sexual abuse by priests.

The interim report blames a "profoundly unhelpful and negative culture", and said "fresh and disturbing" aspects of the way abuse claims were handled keep surfacing.

The report says all clergy must have up-to-date CRB checks, as Robert Pigott reports.
