Miners' strike: MP calls for Orgreave policing inquiry

John Mann, Labour MP for Bassetlaw, has called for an inquiry into alleged manipulation of evidence by South Yorkshire Police during the 1984 miners' strike.

He said claims made in a BBC Inside Out programme relating to the so-called Battle of Orgreave must be examined.

During the miners' strike Orgreave in Yorkshire witnessed some of the worst scenes of violence seen on mainland Britain when 10,000 picketing miners clashed with police.

The claims, that junior officers were told what to write in their statements, were "very convincing", said Mr Mann.

South Yorkshire Police said it would consider whether a review was needed. Dan Johnson reports.

Inside Out is on BBC One Yorkshire and Lincolnshire on Monday, 22 October at 19:30 BST and nationwide on the iPlayer thereafter.
