Redundant Maltby miners back underground at Boulby

Miners made redundant from the coal industry have been working back underground at a potash mine.

Fifty miners who were out of work when Maltby Colliery in Rotherham closed have been taken on to dig salt and potash at Boulby mine on the edge of the North York Moors National Park.

The mine, which is undergoing a major expansion, has recently advertised a further 85 jobs.

Clint Whitehead, who worked as a coal miner for 38 years until Maltby closed, told BBC Look North his new job was a "lifeline" after being "thrown on the scrapheap".
