Police to prioritise tackling female genital mutilation

Tackling female genital mutilation (FGM) is being made a priority in the Thames Valley, the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Anthony Stansfeld has said.

Earlier this year Oxford, Slough, Milton Keynes and Reading were named by the NHS as high-risk areas for the illegal practice.

Thames Valley Police said it had nine possible cases of the practice, which used to be called female circumcision, reported to them in the past four years.

But campaigners say the true number of victims in the region is much higher.
