East Cleveland mining museum needs status-boost, says MP

It is 50 years since the closure of the last ironstone mine in Cleveland.

At one time there were 45 mines, digging out the essential iron-making ore, and employing thousands of miners.

Half a century on from the last closure, it has been suggested by Middlesbrough MP Tom Blenkinsop that an East Cleveland mining museum be given national status in recognition of the importance of the industry.
