Plan to increase M3 and M4 motorway capacity

Plans to reduce speed limits to 60mph on part of the M3 are being fiercely criticised by the AA.

It is one of two major changes proposed to the south's motorways.

The M3 between Farnborough and the M25 will have the hard shoulder converted into a permanent fourth driving lane, and some of the route will have the new lower speed limit.

The M4 between Theale in Berkshire and west London will have the hard shoulder used as a driving lane at peak times, with variable speed limits for more than 30 miles.

The total cost will be more than a billion pounds.
