Tackling soldiers' mental trauma after Afghanistan duty

As British troops pack their bags and head home from Afghanistan, BBC Inside Out investigates the impact of the conflict on the mental health of soldiers.

According to the charity, Combat Stress, one in 25 war veterans are likely to report symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Inside Out spoke to an anonymous Afghanistan veteran who is concerned about the potential ticking time bomb of mental health problems of ex-soldiers over the next decade.

Former soldier Alan Andrews also talked about his experiences of dealing with PTSD and called for greater support for veterans.

Liam Fox, North Somerset MP and former defence secretary, told Inside Out that medical services have become better at dealing with mental health trauma and lessons have been learned.

Inside Out: Afghanistan Special is broadcast on BBC One West on Monday, 27 October at 19:30 GMT and 30 days thereafter on the iPlayer.
