Sentence reflect 'callous' acid attack by Mohammed Rafiq

An 18-year sentence given to an elderly man for masterminding an acid revenge attack on his teenage ex-girlfriend reflects the "callous" nature" of the incident, say police.

Mohammed Rafiq, 80, from Smethwick in the West Midlands, paid Shannon Heaps and Steven Holmes £50 to throw acid at Vikki Horsman after she ended their relationship.

The trio were convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Ms Horsman was attacked at her friend's house in Tividale, West Midlands in April this year.

During sentencing, Heaps, 23, punched the air when he was handed a 12-year jail term and another defendant imitated throwing the acid.

Holmes, 25, was sentenced to 14 years.

Det Con Jason Moseley, from West Midlands Police, told BBC Midlands Today's Ben Godfrey that Ms Horsman was pleased with the sentences.
