Attack victim mother Maggie Hughes sees law change

A woman who has fought for overseas crime victims to have improved access to medical care and justice has seen a new law come into force in Brussels.

Maggie Hughes, from Croydon, south London, began campaigning after her son was left brain-damaged following an attack on the Greek island of Crete in 2008.

Robert Hughes was attacked by four Surrey men who were convicted at a retrial six weeks ago.

Mrs Hughes said the law, which sets out key rights, external, would "cushion" victims.

Levent Altan, from Victim Support Europe, said it set minimum standards across the EU, but Kathleen Walker Shaw, from the European Economic & Social Committee, said a number of member states had yet to put the provisions in place.
