No 10 Christmas tree lights switched on

The Christmas tree lights outside No 10 Downing Street have been switched on after a short ceremony.

Prime Minister David Cameron was joined by invited guests and carol singers for the event.

The button was pushed by eight-year-old Ted McAffrey from Stockton Heath, near Warrington, Cheshire who had raised £80,000 for Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool with a fund-raising campaign called Team Ted.

The youngster devised a campaign where people would text a photo of their favourite teddy bear while recuperating from six hour emergency open heart surgery three years ago.

The youngster who needed six hour emergency open heart surgery in three years ago came up with the fund-raising idea getting people to photo and text their favourite teddy bear.

The tree was supplied by Andrew Ingram, from Christmas Common, near Watlington, Oxfordshire, after an intense contest organised by the British Christmas Tree Growers' Association.
