Duke of Windsor's visit to Nazi Germany in 1937
The Duke and Duchess of Windsor made a controversial visit to Nazi Germany in 1937.
The former King Edward VIII and his new wife Wallace Simpson, for whom he abdicated the throne the previous year, arrived by rail in Berlin where they were greeted by Nazi officials and a cheering crowd.
The duke's equerry, Sir Dudley Forwood, said years later the unofficial trip was not a bid to support the Nazi regime, as many thought, but instead to enable the Duchess to experience a state visit.
