Tribute to 'selfless' Australia backpacker Thomas Jackson

The family of a backpacker who died trying to save another traveller as she was stabbed to death in Australia have paid tribute to the "selfless" 30-year-old.

Thomas Jackson, of Congleton, Cheshire, was injured as he tried to help Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 20, in the attack at a Queensland hostel last week.

Frenchman Smail Ayad, 29, has been charged with murdering Ms Ayliffe-Chung and attempting to murder Mr Jackson.

Police said this charge would be changed to murder.

His mother has released this statement, which is being read by a family friend.
