RMT says Southern strike is 'to keep the railways safe'

Southern Rail has told people they should not try to travel on Tuesday because of a planned drivers' strike.

Aslef are due to walk out for three days in a dispute over driver-only trains. Members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) are staging separate action over the role of train guards.

Southern's parent company Govia Thameslink has asked the Court of Appeal to overturn a High Court refusal to ban the strike action.

RMT's Paul Cox told Radio 4's The World at One his members were "not traditionally radical or militant people" but have been forced to take the action to maintain the safety of the railways - a claim disputed by Govia Thameslink.
