Doctors explain Malala surgery

Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai, 15, is to undergo reconstructive surgery at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital within the next 10 days.

She was shot in the head by the Taliban in October after campaigning for girls' education.

Pakistani surgeons removed a bullet, which entered just above her left eye and grazed her brain, before she was flown to the UK for further treatment.

Earlier this month the teenager was discharged as an inpatient from Queen Elizabeth Hospital as she awaited surgery.

Principal Maxillofacial Prosthetist Stefan Edmondson explained how surgeons planned to create a titanium plate to repair Malala's skull.

As part of the procedure, which is expected to take up to three and a half hours, she will also receive a cochlear implant.
