Birmingham Airport expansion plans put on hold

Proposals to expand Birmingham Airport have not been shortlisted in plans to expand runways and expanding UK airport capacity.

The Airports Commission has recommended new runways be built at Heathrow and Gatwick. Its final report is due by summer 2015.

The commission has not shortlisted proposals for expanding Stansted or Birmingham, but said there was likely to be a case for considering them as "potential options" for any second new runway by 2050.

Bosses at Birmingham Airport said they remained "positive" for future development following the announcement.
