Baby gorilla ventures outside for first time

A baby gorilla born in an emergency caesarean at Bristol Zoo was shown off by her keeper as she went outside for the first time.

The seven week-old Western lowland gorilla was named Afia - which means "Friday born child" in Ghanaian - following a public vote.

She was delivered early after her mother showed signs of the potentially dangerous condition pre-eclampsia.

It is thought to be the first time a newborn gorilla has survived in the UK following a caesarean birth and is among just a handful of such cases worldwide.
