Protecting a newt colony costs developers £1m

Work has begun a £1m project to help protect a population of great crested newts.

The project, one of the biggest in Europe, involves building seven special tunnels under a major road for the 33,000 great crested newts, one of the biggest colonies, on a site of special scientific interest near Peterborough.

The road developers are having to pay for the project, which will keep the newts' migration routes open.
