Cambridge scientists design sun-powered car for world challenge

Scientists in Cambridge have unveiled a new car powered by sunlight which can achieve speeds of up to 70mph (112km/h).

Evolution is designed to compete in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia in just three months time.

A previous model crashed before the 2013 challenge and the lessons learnt have been incorporated into Evolution.

The centre of gravity has been lowered and moved forward making the car more stable.

Aurelia Hibbert, from Cambridge University Eco Racing, said the system and engine had been designed to harness as much power as possible from the sun.
