Derby fire deaths: Philpotts jeered as they are taken to prison

All three defendants convicted of killing six children in a Derby house fire were jeered by crowds as they were taken to begin lengthy jail sentences on Thursday.

Mick Philpott, who was taken to Wakefield Prison, was handed a life term with a minimum of 15 years before he can be considered for parole.

His wife Mairead and friend Paul Mosley were sentenced to 15 years in prison and will serve at least half of that.

The sentencing was met with cheers from the public gallery while crowds jeered and banged on the vans as they were taken away from Nottingham Crown Court.

The convoy was given police protection after they were attacked by the public on Wednesday.

It emerged during the sentencing that Mosley had spoken to the Derby Telegraph's crime reporter about the police, apparently obsessed with getting his clothes back.

Simon Hare reports.
