Sussex mental health patient describes police cell

Increased detentions under the Mental Health Act in Kent have led the county's police and crime commissioner to set up a review.

Figures showed Kent Police had 1,005 detentions under the Mental Health Act in 2015-16, out of which 68 people were housed in custody.

In the first three months of 2016-17, the force has already had 335 detentions in total, with 39 people looked after in cells.

The police use custody cells as a place of safety to house mental health patients until the relevant agency takes over their care.

Suzanne Williams, a Sussex patient who had mental health problems and ended up in a police cell, described what it was like.
