Savile police 'did not join dots', says senior offcier

West Yorkshire Police had intelligence on Jimmy Savile but did not "join together the dots" to start an investigation, the force's assistant chief constable has said.

An internal review of the force's relationship with the former broadcaster has found "no evidence" that he was protected from arrest or prosecution due to his "personal friendships" with some officers.

But the report said "mistakes were made" in handling intelligence.

Ingrid Lee told the BBC's North of England correspondent Danny Savage: "I think there's no doubt that because he was a celebrity, people felt it difficult to come forward, but we've not found anything that suggests that police officers were protecting him.

"The officers behaved professionally at all times."
